Birth chant

>> Wednesday, March 18, 2009

My friend sent me the link to this video of a woman chanting in a deep, guttural way reminiscent of Buddhist monks at a temple - while giving birth.

The whole thing is beautiful, primal, and reminds me of the meditative techniques I learned before giving birth to my first, which really helped in getting through the labour pains.

During my labour, the deep, gentle voice of the woman who taught me dance and meditation ran through my mind. It never occurred to me at the time to use my own voice to help ease the pain.

This woman's grace and calm is amazing. I certainly could have never pulled off such a 'show'.

If I were to go through it again, I think I'd give the guttural chanting a try. I can understand intuitively how it could help a woman a lot during this difficult, painful, magnificent birth process.

I'm sure such noise would have scared the crap out of my very conservative, nerdy doctor, but anyway, it's all about the moment with mother and child.

Some may find the video offensive (wrongly so, but just a warning).

Beautiful video, thank you for posting. :) I also sent this link onward to other women I thought might like it. My birth experience was so different than this: Sterile hospital, laying on my back, pain killers... But my hospital experience in Bangkok was FAR better than it would have been in an American hospital. And yes, I also could not imagine employing this woman's chanting technique in a Thai hospital! LOL!

About Phuket

It's pronounced "pooh-ket", not "fuckit".
Its population is roughly 30% Chinese-Thai, 30% Malay Muslim Thai, 30% Buddhist Thai and an assortment of nutjobs and wackos such as myself.
It's a great place to come for holiday, but I'd rather you not because there's enough traffic here already, thank you very much.
It's a long way from Canada.
